Update

So January is flying right by. And I have been busy. I’m actually getting called in to sub quite often *happy dance*.

And I’m doing my two online classes. And I still don’t know if I’m a big fan of the online format. On one hand, love not having to drive back and forth to campus very other day! Saving tons of money on gas. But with the online classes I feel like as the semester goes on I may miss something. So I’m doing my best to stay motivated and caught up on all of my work.

My daughter is getting so big. She’s lost her first tooth! She looks so cute with a missing tooth, lol. And let me tell you, she’s becoming quite the little reader. She’ll bring home books and read to me! And spelling! On Friday’s they have spelling test, and she’s doing so awesome!

She’s in 4-H. So were adding that to the list of activities for the month. Don’t get me wrong, I love 4-H. I think it is a very positive thing. And we have a great group, a great leader and a awesome agent. So we’re happy. They got to make Valentine’s Day decorations for this month’s meeting, next month they are going to go to a nursing home and hang up their decorations.

As if I don’t have enough going on… I have started helping with after school tutoring. I’m volunteering, of course. I’m loving it.

As far as sports, I’m glad basketball season is finished. Now we’re just waiting for softball season and the spring soccer season to start. I’d thought about volunteering to help coach, not sure. We’ll have to wait and see about scheduled and everything.

So other than that… life’s been busy. We’re awaiting my husband’s deployment. I’m planning on taking my PRAXIS II this summer.

Talk to your kids… find out what is in their homework

My first semester in grad school I did a paper over the effect television was having on our children, and the change the typical American family has experienced in just thirty years or so. For example, one of my sources said the average meaningful conversation a parent will have with their child each week is only about three minutes long. I don’t think that is too hard to believe. Sadly.

Then yesterday, I came across an article about an eight-year-old’s homework talking about slavery and beatings. http://news.yahoo.com/fred-got-two-beatings-per-day-homework-asks-230717586–abc-news.html My jaw hit the floor, and surprisingly I was for a lost of words except for “wow.” I mean, I understand students are going to learn about slavery but really? Like that? Yuck. I wonder how many other parents said, and did, anything.

I mean I was surprised when I stepped into a sixth-grade classroom to find out they were learning about the Holocaust. I know they are going to learn about it, but I was surprised that young. But I showed the movie and actually for a Holocaust documentary it was about as ‘G’ rated as possible. But then I’ve been in another classroom and there was a question on their assignment about the KKK and they did not know anything about it, much less how to pronounce it. And these were Middle school aged children, not an eight-year old! Forget the homework was in bad-taste and racist. What were those teachers thinking bringing that material to such young children. That is what is wrong with today’s society, forgot the fact that people are so stupid and racist it is sickening! But they are forcing those ideas on young children and forcing children to grow up way too fast!! Can’t we let them believe in Santa, Easter Bunny, Magic, Dragons, whatever! and not teach them to be completely paranoid and full of hate before they are even out of elementary school?!?

So parents, make time to talk to your children. They grow up way too fast anyways. And after reading that article, always always always check their homework! And know what they are learning in and around school!

A NEW YOU!

So we’ve all survived the holidays, yay.

My daughter’s birthday, yesterday, was so much fun! She ended up having a couple of friends there. They had fun running around playing the games, bumper cars, and even got to climb the rock wall! The pizza was good – even though the kids really didn’t want to eat, they were too interested in games. And the cake I made was a big success!

My daughter made out like a bandit with Christmas and then three days later, a birthday. I had spent an entire day before Christmas cleaning out her room to make room for new toys. So much for that! She got several new board games, which the game shelf is full! And she got a cool race car track, which is too big to just simply hide it.

So now we’re all counting down until the new year. It is time to start making new year resolutions. Of course the typical one will to be to lose weight. But what else?

What about careers? I used to think I had my whole life planned out. I had wanted to be a veterinarian ever since I was four-years-old. Then decided to focus on equine medicine. I even entered college as a pre-med major. But I quickly changed majors. Then by accident I got into photography. Really thought that was the path for me. And trust me, if money was not an issue I would still be doing photography. But right now it really is just my expensive hobby. Now I really feel like I am finally going the right direction with pursuing a career in teaching.

So just to get everyone to thinking: If money was not an issue, what would be your three dream careers? And why?

For me:

1. Teaching. I really would love to specialize in special education – especially hearing-impaired elementary students.

2. Photography. I know with today’s technology everyone is a photographer. But I do enjoy photography and if I really did not need money I would be happy doing photography 24/7. My favorite subjects: babies.

3. Novelist. Pretty self-explained. But wouldn’t it be wonderful to write the next great American novel.

Okay, so now that we have are creative juices flowing a little. What are three ways you would love to change the world – and for the fun of it, let’s once again pretend money is not an issue.

For me:

1. I would adopt a child. I really would love to have another child. But don’t know about going through pregnancy again and trying to finish school and work and take care of my daughter. But it may not be a major change for the world itself, but you know for that one child it would be a big difference.

2. I would create a scholarship foundation. I was the first in my family to graduate from college and now going to graduate school. I really plan on my daughter to continue her education, and I have already opened a savings account for her to use to go to college. I do not want her to miss out on going to a fantastic school because money was an issue. So I would love to create a scholarship for a local student. I would make the requirements: have a 3.5 or better GPA; be involved in extracurricular activities for the entire four years of high school; non-school activities (4-H would be emphasised); volunteering (at least 500 hours for their high school career); they would be required to participate in a study abroad program; and I would require an essay. Okay, I know you’re thinking ‘wow, that’s a lot of requirements for one little scholarship.’ But all of the requirements are encouraging students to better themselves in one way or another, plus all of the requirements would help them, not only to get into a good school but it all would look great on a resume.

3. I would donate to local animal shelters. I have two rescue cats. And knowing me, even though two cats are more than enough, if I find another cat dumped in town or something I will probably bring it home too. But I would love to help an animal shelter – a no-kill shelter especially. Don’t know how many of you heard about Scruffy’s story but that was heartbreaking. And things like that should not happen, ever.

And finally, let’s think about our bucket list. What is something that would want to add to your bucket list? Maybe 2012 will be the year you get to scratch it off that list!!

1. I want to see all 50 states. And I don’t mean just drive through them, I would like to experience each state.

2. I want to take the test, and hopefully, go on Jeopardy. I may not be Ken Jennings smart, but I would like to see how I do.

So hopefully we all have our resolutions planned out. Let’s get ready to say ‘goodbye’ to 2011 and ‘hello’ to 2012. Let’s remember to eat our black-eyed peas and salt meat.

Happy Birthday and cake making!

Can not believe my little girl is going to be 6 years-old tomorrow! In just a short ten years she is going to be driving. Crazy!

Still hoping her birthday party goes well, not having high hopes for too many guests. The party is tomorrow and I have not heard from a single child, so as of right now there are no kids coming.

But I have her birthday cake finished!! I spent about 7 hours on this cake. It may not be picture perfect, but she is so excited about it!! And I am very happy with the finished product. The true test will be tomorrow – the taste test, lol. And it’s going to be funny, my hands look like I got in a fight with a rainbow – from the food dye. I can only imagine what our teeth are going to look like after we bite into the cake.

So here are some pictures of her “R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps” cake:

The cake itself

She wanted the cake to be spooky. I'd attempted to make the Blob that Ate Everything... It looked a little dumb. So I made pumpkins and added gummy worms.

The finished cake!

Big Kids

I don’t care how old you are, it’s always so much fun playing with new toys. My daughter got two new board games, hungry hungry hippos and chutes and ladders. The three of us played hungry hungry hippos for over an hour last night. Today I put together her new Hot Wheels race track. Its a fire sky jump track, so much fun – lol. Now her and her dad are in there playing with the race track.

Last year Santa brought her a Goosebumps video game. I played that game for several hours. Except, that game is exteremly difficult – never did beat it.

Just think it is funny that now matter how old you are, you still are right there in the floor playing with your kids’ new toys.

Got the stuff needed to make her birthday cake. Hopefully its not a complete disaster – the cake and/or the party.

Some Christmas Joy

So yesterday my daughter was trying to sing the Twelve Days of Christmas, except she was forgetting some of the lyrics. I started giving her a hard time and making up new lyrics for the song. Then she started making up lyrics also. Before we knew it, we had a new version of the Twelve Days of Christmas.

Enjoy…

On the first day of Christmas, this season gave to me…

1 Charlie Brown Christmas tree

2 Rotten kitties

3 Missed phone calls

4 Loads of laundry

12 Months until this time next year

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

3 days ’til Christmas

Hope everyone has their last-minute shopping finished. I am completely finished! Everything is wrapped! Well… except my father-in-law’s gift, a model airplane that my husband is still building. We’ll see if he finishes it in time.

But with it getting even closer to Christmas, there are going to be several of us on the road this weekend. Luckily around here the weather is going to be beautiful, with the highs for Christmas in the high-40′s – so should be an easy trip. But there are always accidents and with so many of us having cell phones, do you have your emergency contacts listed in your phone’s contact book/phone book? Most of us have tens of hundreds of names in our phone, how are people suppose to know which contact to call in case there is an emergency? You’re supposed to list the contact(s) that you would want to be notified In Case of an Emergency as: ICE “Jane Smith.” This will make it a lot easier to notify your contacts. Another idea, I have a card – a pet card – in my wallet saying there are animals depending on me at my home, and it gives my address. So no one will forget about my pets.

Another thing to think about is an emergency kit in your car. Of course, water, a first-aid kit, blanket, lighter/matches, and something you might not think of… Fritos. And it is not for eating… instead, to make a fire if needed. I know it sounds crazy, but apparently Fritos make awesome kindling to start a fire.

And finally, let someone know where you are going. Leave a note, make a call…something!

Have a wonderful and safe holiday weekend!

Five days ’til Christmas

It’s completely crazy that Christmas is almost here!

I haven’t even put up my tree yet!! Guess that will be my daughter’s and my project tonight. Should be a lot of fun keeping the two cats from completely destroying my poor little three-foot tree.

A couple of weeks ago I made my daughter a video from Santa, she was on the naughty list. Then the other day I made her another video – this time putting her on the nice list. But I was waiting for the perfect moment to show her the video. I guess with it being five short days until Christmas, I ought to show her. It was so cute. She was sitting in my lap, completely glued to the computer screen, and had her fingers crossed. When Santa told her that she was on the nice list, she flew out of my lap and started jumping around saying “WOOHOO!!!!!!”

Some great books to read to your little ones for Christmas:

The Night Before Christmas

The Longest Christmas List Ever

The Twelve Worst Days of Christmas

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Naughty or Nice?

Ever since my daughter started school she has developed a big attitude – you know, the joy of children picking up little habits from other kids. At first I would pass it off with a joke, saying she was a sixteen-year-old trapped in a five-year-old’s body. But the attitude was getting bad and time-out doesn’t work. So the other day I made a video from Santa for her. I put her on the naughty list. When she watched the video I wasn’t sure if my plan worked, she really didn’t make a comment about it.

But actually I have noticed a big change in her behavior. She has been polite, saying yes ma’am and no ma’am, she helps with the housework, no battles trying to get her to do anything. The only real problem I’ve had was the other day – one of her friends had a birthday party and my daughter was invited to it. But after the party the kids were just going to have a sleepover. Okay, I’m not against sleepovers. But I am a little overprotective. She’s only five — there will be plenty of time for her to have sleepovers. Plus, I’ve met the other girl’s mom, but we’ve never really talked and I’ve never been to their house… do you really think I would just turn my child loose in that situation? No. We went to the party – there ended up being five girls, so I helped do manicures and stuff. Got to know the mom a little. And I told my daughter maybe next time she could spend the night.

And I told my daughter after her party in a couple of weeks if the other girls’ parents are okay with them sleeping over at our house then that would be fine with me. So my daughter, being over dramatic about everything, starts crying that she will never get to do a sleepover…

But yesterday our big project was tackling that mess we call her room. I expect her to clean her room – of course things don’t always get put where they are supposed to. And so every couple of months I go in there and try to reorganize it, again. Well, yesterday we actually went through EVERYTHING. If it was broken it was trashed. I actually found toys that 1. I don’t even remember and 2. were babyish. But I was very proud of her, she did not battle about which toys stayed and which would go to another child. I know what toys she really likes and plays with so I don’t expect her to get rid of them. But there were a couple of books that are too young for her and she’s going to give them to her baby cousin next week when we seen him at Christmas – so proud of her.

But her room looks AMAZING!!! And now there is room for the new toys she is going to get for Christmas and birthday, which was my main goal.

But she’s been doing good. And today – the start of Christmas break – she was watching Dora, and it’s the Christmas episode where Swiper is on the naughty list. Well, anyways, the Santa on the show said that Kira was on the nice list. So she asked me if she really was on the nice list now. I said I wasn’t sure, I hadn’t talked to Santa lately. So I made her another video, this time she is on the nice list. I haven’t shown it to her yet. But I’m sure she’ll be happy.

December Babies and Unbirthdays

My mom’s birthday is in January and I remember her always telling me that for her birthday she would get an extra gift at Christmas time – that didn’t sound like fun. Then luck would have it that I would have a daughter around Christmas time. My daughter’s birthday is December 28. And even though we drive a couple of hours every year for Thanksgiving and for Christmas to have the annual family get together (a separate get together for each holiday, for each year, for each family), I REFUSE to have my daughter’s birthday during a Christmas get together! We have her birthday at our house, so the families have to drive a couple of hours for a change, and everyone has to get along and deal with each other’s company. And for the most part, it works. So far luck has been on our side and haven’t had to cancel because of the weather. And I’ve only had to work around the families’ work schedules a little bit to try to get everyone together.

This year is different. I am attempting to have a kids party – inviting some classmates and teammates. AND we’re having it at a public place – offers games and pizza! I’ve already sent the invitations and a few kids have already said that they would not be able to come because they will be out-of-town – that’s understandable. So I had a crazy – and fun – idea. I will see how this party goes — I’m really hoping for three-to-six other kids, and then we will have a unbirthday party in the summer. You hear of people having half-birthdays. Naa… I want to give my daughter and her friends, a unbirthday/back to school party. With it being during the summer, they could go swimming, play games outside, I could paint faces, ect. etc. And with it being a unbirthday people would not have to worry about buying a gift or anything. Just food and fun in the sun!
